KINGSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) – Any mom like Brittany Kochel, having difficulties breastfeeding their babies can now bring them to the NEPA Breastfeeding Center. Housed inside the Pediatrics Associates of Kingston office, questions about safe pumping of milk to latching difficulties can all be addressed.
“My mom bottle fed us. So, I didn’t really have anyone to ask questions to who knows the right answers,” said Kochel.
This center is a big step for the pediatrics office, which recently opened its breastfeeding support program to non-patients. Back in October, doctors decided to expand their mission to not only support more babies in the area, but provide treatment for moms.
“I treat thrush, I treat mastitis. If the baby is tongue tied, with the pediatrician’s permission, I can do a frenotomy,” said Darnetta Yusko. She is a family nurse practitioner and an international board certified lactation consultant. That means she is able to treat both mom and child, a service the facility just started offering to make it easier on new mothers. The National Breastfeeding Center endorsed them last month, making the NEPA Breastfeeding Center the only certified breastfeeding program in the area, according to doctors. Yusko says the need for the support is critical for mothers and newborns.
“I feel like they get a lot of support at the hospital and then when they go home, that support is fallen by the waistline,” said Yusko.
“From a pediatrician’s standpoint, we’d like to see the breastfeeding rate at 100 percent,” said Dr. Jeffrey Kile, the owner of Pediatrics Associates of Kingston.
Kile says not only is breastfeeding cheaper than buying formula, antibodies in the milk can protect babies against viruses and bacteria.
Kochel says she’s glad for the support.
Even if I have random questions, I can always get in touch with Darnetta. She’s always there to help,” said Kochel.
