Local walkathon raises funds for Children’s Hospital of Omaha – Beatrice Daily Sun

Over $5,800 was raised for Children’s Hospital of Omaha, a Children’s Miracle Network-affiliated hospital, during the Miracle Miles for Kids Walk-a-thon held on June 10 in Beatrice. Donations in kind were received and valued at over $1,900.

Alyssa DeFrain, the development officer from Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Foundation, as well as American Legion Auxiliary president, Loree Dienstbier, and American Legion commander, Alvin Huls, welcomed all those who attended..

Madison Baker led the Miracle Miles for Kids Walkathon. She was accompanied by her parents, Dean and Michelle Baker, her brother, Colten, her grandparents, Mike and Linda Lawler and Darryl and Gloria Baker, and many other relatives and friends.

When Madison was eight months old, she was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. On September 30, 2003, Madison had heart surgery to repair her ASD. During surgery, her doctors discovered six additional holes in her heart and repaired them. At 18 months, during a check up, her doctor suspected that there were some other issues with Madison’s health. She had a lack of energy and was a bit behind in her motor skills. A neurologist at Children’s Hospital informed them that Madison had suffered a stroke due to complications during birth. At age twelve, she started to have seizures. She still visits Children’s Hospital every six months for a check up due to her seizures and an annual check up for her heart. Madison will need to undergo heart surgery again as she gets older and her heart grows to repair her ASD.

The family has told us that her care at Children’s has been wonderful.

All Children’s Miracle Network contributions directly benefit local member hospitals. Alyssa said that the funds will go toward their building addition at the hospital.

Donations are being accepted until June 21, according to Marian Melcher who chaired the event. The American Legion Auxiliary, the American Legion, the Son’s of the American Legion and the Legion Riders sponsor this event.

A special thanks to all of the businesses and organizations for their contributions and to all the individuals for their personal donations. Without the support of the community, this would not be possible.

People who would still like to make a donation may send their contribution to: Miracle Miles for Kids Walkathon, in care of Marian Melcher, 1114 S. Sixth St., Beatrice, NE 68310. For more information about the Children’s Miracle Network, contact Melcher at 402-239-0746.
