TOM Holland revealed the makers of the Spiderman reboot didn’t tell him he’d won the role before announcing it online.
The actor, 21, beat 1,500 applicants to the coveted role, which sees him take over from Andrew Garfield as the web-slinging superhero.
On tonight’s The Graham Norton Show, the young star explains: “It was a crazy process. The further I got down the line the more I really wanted the job and every day was searching the Internet for any bit of news of casting.
“After about five or six months of auditioning Marvel posted on their website that I was the new Spiderman. I thought they would call me at least! Marvel apologise about it all the time and I think they told me not to anyone… I have been travelling the world telling that story over and over again!”
Tom’s had a meteoric rise to fame after starring in Billy Elliott the Musical and landing a string of big screen roles, and he now rubs shoulders with Hollywood A-listers like Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr.
He said: “I got very nervous about meeting Robert Downey Jnr as I have been a fan of his my entire life and when I met him I was thinking, ‘You look different in person, something isn’t quite the same. And then Robert walked in and I realised I had been chatting to his stunt double!’”
The Brit is preparing to swap the UK for LA as his career continues on an upward trajectory.
“I have been looking to move out for a couple of years and while I was away my mother told me she had found the most amazing apartment for me,” he said. “It looked nice enough so I told her to put in an offer and she said, ‘I’ve done it, it’s gone through and it’s yours.’
“So basically she bought me a flat with my money! It is lovely but I would have liked a little say in the whole process! My plan was to go to LA and live in America and I now live just a stone’s throw from my parents!”
Fellow guest Mark Wahlberg advised Tom to invest in a jacuzzi and encouraged him to have fun.
He said: “I am the last person he should take advice from. Though you should move to LA and get a Jacuzzi. Have some fun dude! Have some fun for me – I’m married with four kids and I just get yelled at!”
