Marvel has decided who will direct Captain Marvel – The Verge

Last summer, Marvel Studios announced that it cast Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island) to lead its upcoming superhero film Captain Marvel. Since then, the company has been working to find the right person to helm the film. Today, Variety reports that it finally made its decision: co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.

According to Variety, Marvel came to the decision after it was satisfied that the script was “in the right shape before tapping who would direct it.” The studios met with a number of contenders. Boden and Fleck have noteworthy experience working on television, directing episodes of the series Billions and The Affair, and helming critically acclaimed films like Sugar, Half Nelson, and Mississippi Grind.

Since the film was announced, Marvel indicated that it planned to have a woman direct the film. It had already brought on Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman and Inside Out screenwriter Meg LeFauve to write the script.

Yesterday, Marvel Studios held an open-house event that showed off some concept art from the film, revealing that Captain Marvel’s costume would be a modern take on the character’s traditional costume. Earlier this week, Larson told Collider that she was excited to play the character, and was looking forward to bringing some “complexity” to the role.

Originally created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in the 1960s, the Captain Marvel character has a long history in Marvel’s comics, with a number of heroes taking on the name. This film will be about Carol Danvers, who was originally known as Ms. Marvel before assuming the Captain Marvel mantle in 2012.

It’ll be interesting to see how Marvel streamlines Danvers’ origin story. In the comics, Danvers was an Air Force pilot who gained superpowers after being caught in an explosion, fusing her DNA with the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. The current Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan, who was first introduced in 2013 and quickly became a fan favorite.

Captain Marvel is due in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
