Marvel has considered doing its own version of Comic-Con – SYFY WIRE (blog)
Marvel has had a formidable presence at San Diego Comic-Con for years, both with the publisher’s gigantic, central booth on the convention floor and, for the past decade, the film studio’s (mostly) annual Saturday afternoon blowout in Hall H. Let’s also not forget about the increasing presence of the TV shows as well, whether it be Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Netflix Defenders series or the upcoming Runaways.
But while Marvel is dominant in San Diego, it’s still one of hundreds of brands fighting for the attention of that con’s 150,000 yearly attendees. At the same time, Marvel’s parent company Disney has made headway in recent years with its own biennial fan showcase, D23 Expo. And of course there’s also Star Wars Celebration, which focuses on another Disney property you may have heard of. So it would only make sense for Marvel to launch its own convention as well, wouldn’t it?
During this past week’s press junket in Los Angeles for Thor: Ragnarok, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Fandango that the idea has definitely come up:
“Over the years there have been discussions about that. I think what we try to do occasionally in San Diego we’re very proud of and think is a fun tradition. That being said, I think [Star Wars] Celebration is pretty amazing. I’ve been to a few Celebrations and the idea of doing something like that…I think we have enough content, and enough fans, and enough ideas that we could easily do something like that, I’m just not sure where or when.”
Between the comics and the movies (22 of them by the time Avengers 4 rolls around in 2019) and the toys and the TV shows and everything else, a Marvel Celebration (for lack of a better name at the moment) would seem like a no-brainer. It wouldn’t even have to take away from the brand’s presence at Comic-Con: Marvel successfully staged presentations at both D23 and San Diego this year, and with so much going on under the Marvel banner it seems like the company could continue to navigate between the different events (especially if Marvel Celebration took place during D23′s off-years).
Feige seems into the idea. What about you? Do you think it makes sense and would you want to add a Marvel Celebration to your calendar every couple of years?
