CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) — UPDATE 10/7/17 @ 5:05 p.m.
CABELL COUNTY W.Va. (WSAZ) — One day after an apparent murder-suicide involving a mother and her children, preliminary autopsy results reinforce what officials with the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office originally suspected: that the mother is the shooter.

Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle said, Friday, investigators believed that Leah Cart, 39, shot her children, aged 7-years-old and 5-years-old, before turning the gun on herself.

According to Zerkle, the preliminary autopsy results indeed indicate that the mother pulled the trigger. Investigators are still awaiting the final results of the autopsy.

Five-year-old Olivia Cart died in the shooting, and 7-year-old Jonah Cart was undergoing surgery in a Huntington hospital.

Zerkle says, as of Saturday afternoon, Jonah is still “hanging on [to his life] by a thread.”

The shooting happened Friday afternoon in the 2000 block of Benedict Road in Culloden.
