DAYTON, OH (WDTN) – Dayton Police say two children were shot Thursday and their mother is in custody as a person of interest.
Chief of Dayton Police Richard Biehl said Thursday the two children that were shot, an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, are still at Dayton Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both children were shot in the head and are in critical condition, according to Chief Biehl.
Biehl said the person of interest is the mother of the children and the case is still under investigation and charges are pending. The name of the mother is not being released until the case is presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
The woman has been booked into the Montgomery County Jail on two counts of felonious assault. Formal charges are expected after the case is presented to prosecutors.
Biehl said investigators suspect a mental health issue contributed to the incident. He said the shooting occurred inside the home and the gun used was found in the house as well.
A third child, an 11-year-old girl was also in the home and was not injured. She is now in a safe place, according to police.
Dayton Police Major Eric Henderson told reporters Thursday a 911 call came in around 10:00 a.m. Thursday saying people were performing life-saving measures on two children. When police arrived in the 3800 block of Lori Sue Avenue they found two children had been shot and were found in the front yard of the home.
Henderson would not confirm the ages of the children but did say both children are under the age of 10.
A nearby school was placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes but detectives stress the school was not involved in this incident.
