Officers were dispatched to an apartment building in the 800 block of West 9th Street shortly after 8:30 a.m. Monday.
Police say the boys’ mother called them, and as officers were going through the apartment they discovered the children’s bodies.
The children may have drowned, police say, but note an investigation into the cause of death continues.
One boy was 5 years old and other just a few months old.
The children’s mother was questioned by police and taken into custody. Investigators say she is considered the prime suspect in the boys’ death.
“Yes… definitely the person who has the authority over the house at this time is always considered a suspect,” said Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy. “But you have to rule everything out first in this kind of situation. And we’re interviewing all parties and witnesses at this time.”
According to Tracy, no other suspects are being sought in the case.
Shortly after officers first arrived at the apartment, the fire department was dispatched to the same location for a reported gas leak.
Firefighters arrived and opened windows to air out the apartment.
Crews from Delmarva Power also arrived on the scene and turned off the gas.
It was not immediately clear what caused the gas leak. Details of exactly what happened in the apartment continue to emerge.
So far no charges have been filed in the boys’ deaths.
